It certainly came out of nowhere when LSU cornerback Sevyn Banks announced that he is declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft and not coming back to Baton Rouge for his final collegiate season. According to the Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, as a fifth-year senior, Banks did not have to formally submit his name for the draft by the January 16th underclassmen deadline. The announcement leaves Tiger fans stunned as many assumed that Banks would be coming back, but instead the veteran defensive back is taking his talents to the next level.
Sevyn Banks’ Time with Ohio State and LSU:
Banks would be listed as the No. 58 overall recruit in his class and a four-star recruit coming out of high school. The Orlando native decided that he was going to take his talents up north and attend Ohio State. Banks saw limited action during his freshman season with the Buckeyes as he appeared in just six games during the 2018 season.
His lone tackle came against Maryland and he was also involved in special teams where he returned a 33-yard punt against Michigan. Banks’ production would continue to ramp up heading into his sophomore season in 2019 where he appeared in all 14 games as Ohio State went all the way to the College Football Playoff Semifinals. His first interception of his career would come against Northwestern and he was able to record a season-high in tackles against FAU and Rutgers.
Banks registered 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception on the year. In a shortened 2020 season, Banks would start in all eight games for the Buckeyes as Ohio State made their appearance in the national championship against Alabama. The junior cornerback was able to record a season-high seven tackles against the Crimson Tide. He would also lead the Buckeyes with seven pass breakups and a total of eight passes defended.
Injuries would start to cause Banks to miss time on the field in his next two seasons of his collegiate career. During the 2021 season, Banks missed the first two games of the year and would also miss the final three games of the season due to an injury. The 2021 season would be the last for Banks at Ohio State as he used his graduate transfer to head to LSU.
Banks had minimal time on the field for the Tigers after he suffered a scary injury against Auburn that would effectively end his season with LSU. He suffered a bruised spinal cord injury when he was trying to make a tackle on the opening kickoff against Auburn.
