The series between UAB and LSU is tied at one win a piece. UAB took down the Tigers during the 2000 season, 13-10 in Baton Rouge. The last meeting between the two games came during the 2013 season where LSU won in Death Valley, 56-17.
Previewing LSU Heading into Week 12:
LSU will have to keep their emotions in check coming off a physical game against Arkansas where they had to rely heavily on their defense to keep them in the game. It was a cold day for the offense as they struggled to move the ball through the air against the Razorback defense.
Arkansas was able to disguise different coverages in their secondary that allowed for them to create pressure to Jayden Daniels. Daniels only had 86 yards through the air as LSU’s offense stuck to the ground game in the 13-10 win over the Razorbacks. The junior quarterback coughed up the ball and wasn’t able to find any rhythm against the Arkansas defense.
Josh Williams led the charge for the Tiger rushing attack with 19 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown. The offensive line was able to hold their mark to allow Williams the opportunity to bust big runs to set up the purple and gold into plus territory. LSU will have to clean things up in the passing game against UAB before they will hit the road next week to take on Texas A&M to close out the regular season.
Even with the offensive struggles on Saturday, the defense was able to flex their muscle against a limited Arkansas passing attack. Harold Perkins was the difference maker for the Tigers as he was able to have eight total tackles (six solo), four sacks and four tackles for loss. Perkins and the LSU defense have been solid down the stretch for LSU as they have been able to shut down offenses in the SEC.
Scouting LSU’s Opponent: UAB
UAB is coming into the LSU game with a record of 5-5 as they are still searching for their six win of the season to become bowl eligible. The Blazers are coming off a 41-21 win at home against North Texas on Saturday. UAB relied heavily on the running game to be able to pick up win No. 5 on the year.
Jermaine Brown Jr. and DeWayne McBride led the rushing attack for the Blazers in the dominating win over the Mean Green. Brown Jr. had 24 carries for 150 yards and a touchdown. McBride added 21 carries for 120 yards and three touchdowns. UAB was able to pile up 271 total rushing yards to be able to control the game from start to finish.
The Tiger defense will have to deal with one of the best running backs in the country on offense and the offense for LSU will be challenged against a strong secondary. LSU’s defense have been able to limit some of the top running backs in the SEC and they will have to continue that momentum against the UAB rushing attack on Saturday night.
UAB’s defense has allowed 23.7 points per game and 5.2 yards per play, both of which rank in the top 40 in FBS. UAB is led on the defensive line by Kelle Sanders and Drew Tuazama. Both have proven that they can generate pressure to the opposing quarterback The defense for the Blazers have been inconsistent through the run and the air. UAB is currently ranked 97th in the country for yards allowed per run (4.6) and 78th in pass success rate.
Devodric Bynum and Starling Thomas V have both been key pieces in the UAB secondary as the season has progressed. Bynum and Thomas V have been a part of a strong secondary for the Blazers and have lived up the billing for their preseason expectations that they received.
UAB @ LSU Prediction:
LSU won’t be able to look ahead to their next game on the schedule as UAB is better than their record shows. It will be important for the Tigers to contain the Blazer’s running game, but their gameplan can’t just be centered on that only as UAB can find ways to beat you through the air.
LSU will need to see an emergence from their passing game as they will look to rebound after recent struggles on the road against Arkansas. Daniels can hopefully get going and be able to extend the lead for the Tigers that way he can rest in the second half before two crucial games coming up on LSU’s schedule. Look for the Tigers to control this game and send out their seniors on a high note in the final home game of 2022.
Prediction: UAB 20, LSU 41
