A few days after Derek Carr rejected a trade to the New Orleans Saints, the Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with the 31-year old quarterback. According to Ian Rapoport, the Raiders release of Carr is now official and he’ll appear on the transaction wire today. Las Vegas released him before $40.4 million in his contract became guaranteed today. He’s now a free agent and able to talk to teams before the league year begins.
Derek Carr Tenure With The Raiders:
Carr was selected by the Raiders with the 36th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and has spent the last nine years with the team. Through his nine years with Las Vegas, Carr threw for 35,222 yards and 217 touchdowns. He was 63-79 as a starter for the franchise and the Raiders would make the playoffs twice during his tenure with the team.
Teams That Could Be Suitors For Derek Carr:
There are quarterback needy teams that will be in the running for the veteran quarterback. Those teams are the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders. The Saints were the only team that visited with Carr and put a trade offer on the table to the veteran quarterback.
With Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton’s future with New Orleans being in question, the Saints are one of the frontrunners in the race to land Carr. Another notable team that will be in the race is in the Saints division and that is the Panthers. The Panthers also have question marks at the quarterback position as Sam Darnold. Darnold showed improvement this season, but is unlikely to be the long-term answer as the signal caller for Carolina with a new coaching staff in place.
The other two three teams that will likely be in the running are the Jets, Colts and the Commanders. The Jets do have ties with Carr with the new hire of former Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing and former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The two have built relationships with Aaron Rodgers, Carr and Ryan Tannehill. New York will certainly be on the market to make a splash for a quarterback.
Washington and Indianapolis will certainly be in the mix for a quarterback this season. The Commanders can offer a dynamic offense with a wide receiver trio of Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson. Indianapolis is in the same boat as Matt Ryan wasn’t the answer and if they are unable to land Carr they will certainly go after one of the quarterbacks in the upcoming draft class.
