Just hours after New Orleans worked on a deal that would adjust Cam Jordan’s contract, the Saints have done the same with one of their top running backs. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the New Orleans Saints have restructured their contract with running back Alvin Kamara, saving another $7 million against the salary cap. The black and gold are starting to make progress in being in compliance with the NFL’s salary cap ahead of the new league season on March 15th.
Alvin Kamara’s 2022 Season and Outlook for 2023 Season:
The third-round selection in the 2017 draft has emerged as one of them most explosive offensive weapons in the NFL during his six seasons with New Orleans. Kamara appeared in 15 games during the 2022 season, with 13 of them being starts. During the 2022 season, Kamara had 223 rushes for 897 yards and two touchdowns.
He remained active in the receiving game as he had 57 receptions for 490 yards and two touchdowns. Kamara has totaled at least 1,300 scrimmage yards in each of his six NFL seasons. The Tennessee product saw a dip in his touchdown total this past season, but he was able to tie Marques Colston with the most touchdowns in franchise history (72).
Kamara’s best game of the 2022 season came against the Las Vegas Raiders. He rushed 18 times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Through the air, Kamara racked up nine receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns. The veteran running back was a big part in the Saints beating the Raiders, 24-0, as Kamara scored all of the Saints touchdowns in the shutout victory.
Outside of that performance against Las Vegas it was a rather disappointing season for Kamara as he was dealing with injuries and an offense that struggled mightily throughout the year. Even with all of that, Kamara proved that he is one of the best running backs in the league. With that, there is reason for optimism heading into the 2023 season, especially with the recent signing of Derek Carr.
The only question marks that surround the veteran running back is if he will be suspended for some time next season, but other than that the ceiling will be high for Kamara to have a bounceback season with a new signal caller coming to town.
